After children wrote to Bridwell wanting to know how Clifford got so big, Bridwell added titles such as Clifford the Small Red Puppy (1972), Clifford’s First Valentine’s Day (1997), and Clifford’s First School Day (1999) to include stories revolving around Clifford as a puppy.

Bridwell continued to write about Clifford, compiling stories such as Clifford Takes a Trip (1966), Clifford’s Good Deeds (1975), Clifford and the Grouchy Neighbors (1985), Clifford the Firehouse Dog (1994), Clifford and the Halloween Parade (1999), and Clifford Goes to Dog School (2002). One editor he visited suggested that he write and illustrate his own book, so he produced Clifford the Big Red Dog, which was published in 1963. In the early 1960s Bridwell tried to obtain work as a children’s illustrator. Bridwell studied at the John Herron Art Institute (now the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University) in Indianapolis before attending Cooper Union in New York, New York.
